Titel: what's wrong with flash player?
I am installing RC1 but I realize the flash player shows no text in both firefox and konqueror. I tried both running the script from the tar ball and apt-get install flashplugin-nonfree. I have already have gsfont and gsfont-x11 installed. I also installed msttcorefonts but still no luck.

How does the "automated firefox download" work? I apt-get install flashplugin-nonfree and it says installation fails

can you see letters on that site:
http://www.autobahn.nrw.de/olsim3_1/rgwest30.html

In Mozilla under Linux it looks like that (same in Opera):
http://img63.imageshack.us/img63/556/flashlinoa7.png

In Opera under w2k (vmware-installation) it looks like that:
http://img108.imageshack.us/img108/4396/flashwincv0.png

Makes some kind of a difference in handling flash-sites.

piper,

I really would love to see that Adobe-Macromedia-sh*t blown to the moon, but unfortunatelly it's part of web life. And more and more I come across flash-sites, where I cannot read the letters, and I really have installed quite a lot of fonts, for sure all common fonts (open and proprietary). And I think, it's not Linux, it's the flash for Linux, they are producing, which is faulty. Just say that without being able to verify it, of course.

I agree with "Adobe-Macromedia-sh*t blown to the moon" hehe lol

While we both know it's not going away Winken I just wish they (Adobe) could do a better (and support) with linux.

piper,

possibly there are signs that there are more Linux users than we think. As I see the german news magazine www.spiegel.de have gone back to flash 7 for their video-news. I am sure, they used flash 8, because I was not able to watch them a few months ago under Linux. Maybe somebody else might confirm that.

But I am not sure if Adobe care that flash is some kind of standard as "being widely used".

hubi, for me it said that I need flash 8, and yes I don't think adobe cares either.

h2, i wonder if flashplugin-nonfree is the difference, I am going to uninstall this and go to that in ff.

if you mean:

The only common font that has not been installed was Tahoma, I have done that now and restarted X. Still no hope. What could that font be. It might really be only a font issue.

Another thing. A right click on a flash brings up a context menue and there is sg like "configuration" ("Einstellung" in German), there are no fonts anymore either - they definitely were always there. That's weird.

YES!!! BRILLIANT!!!

It is the description about the nonfree-font and changing configuration in /etc/X11/fs/config. One finds it in the comments.

Everything which is written in the text was already textbook style here.

Genius!

Thx a lot

Hasn't worked for me unfortunately - even when following all of the advice at
http://linux.inet.hr/flash_plugin_on_x11r7.htm

I have installed all of the fonts (except freefont which couldn't be found - although I have ttf-freefont installed)

Then I checked for (and editted) my config file which is in /etc/X11/fs and made the smbolic link in /usr/X11R6/lib/X11 using ln -s /etc/X11/fs

However, I still see no text at http://www.autobahn.nrw.de/olsim3_1/rgwest30.html

I am using Firefox, but get the same result with Konquerer.

I have flashplayer-mozilla installed

Any other ideas?

Success!!!!

I needed to do this bit

f you have followed all advices above and you still don't see text properly, change to your /var/lib/defoma/x-ttcidfont-conf.d/dirs/TrueType directory and check that you have fonts.scale and fonts.dir files in it. If you don't, you'll need to run

ttmkfdir .
mkfontdir .

The files were there, but the latter was empty.

Titel: RE: Re: RE: Re: RE: Re: RE: what
Just tested it. It does not work with flashplayer-mozilla. Use flashplugin-nonfree, which gets and installs the flashplayer directly from Adobe/Macromedia. Or you get the flashplayer directly from them and install it on your own.

Didn't even realize there was a problem.Duh.

Followed the directions here:http://linux.inet.hr/flash_plugin_on_x11r7.html
And all is well. Using Firefox1.5.0.7 and the flash-nonfree Shockwave Flash 7.0 r68

All I had to do was:
edit your /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fs/config (deliberately using that long path to ascertain file is in place) and make sure you have /var/lib/defoma/x-ttcidfont-conf.d/dirs/TrueType/ path listed in the catalogue line.

hey,
have been struggling w/this issue on several machines w/different debian distros as the local supermarkets here let you browse their ads online and they use different fonts..the pages always come up on M$ box, however has been a crapshoot w/Debian, firefox and the flash plugin.
seems now followng the advise from craigevil has solved the problem on about 99% of the sites visited.
i have sinced then implemented his fix on all my boxes and that make flash not work like it should most of the time..
depending on the debian version installed on my boxes (i currently have 2 versions of kanotx running...one an older stable version and one RC2) to get the font issued fix i also had to make sure the folllowing were installed and at the upgraded versions:
- install x-ttcidfont-conf package
- install msttcorefonts package
- install ttf-freefont package
- install ttf-bitstream-vera package
- install ttf-xfree86-nonfree package
the last one was the biggie...only after installing that one i was able to view the website here: http://www.autobahn.nrw.de/olsim3_1/rgwest30.html

so i can now browse the ads of my local supermarkets.....and this works for about 99% of sites...i still find the ocassional site that wont display fonts..

www.lge.com is one of those sites.....can get the fonts to work in M$, but not w/kanotix..... can anyone else get it to work?

some text on lge.com, but not the menu/submenu text. Oddly enough I had the same problem with a client's new sample page for a new site with flash, no text at all shows in firefox or opera on linux.

Although in this case, the lack of text is in my opinion a definite improvement, lol, it is a similar issue I guess, and it's the first total lack of text I've seen. I'd post the swf but that would probably annoy the client.
