Just so anyone who is due to "dist-upgrade" (particularly if you usually use H2's script, like me).

I've just run the script, everything seemed to go OK.

When it came to "installing video driver", I told it to put the nvidia driver into the system, as I normally would.

It then refused to start the X server.

I checked and it seemed to be saying that it couldn't find a couple of modules - bitmap and pcidata.

I have no idea what these are.

I re-ran the script a couple of times, trying various options that offered the suggestion of the -f (force) arguement/switch (I can't remember what these are called).

It still didn't want to start the X server.

Eventually I was offered the option of "using Kano's fix for Xorg7" (well I think thats what it said anyway).

Now I'm not sure if it was an Xorg problem or not, though the errors did seem to show up in /var/log/Xorg.0.log so I'm guessing that they were.

The only other error that seemed to appear, was one that said that the system hadn't mounted /dev/hda2 - it guessed that it was swap space, but it didn't auto mount it.

That also disappeared after I'd applied the Xorg "fix".

This might not affect anyone else in the same what it got me. I just couldn't remember where too look to see if there was any issues with the H2 script. I seem to recall that theres somewhere I'm supposed to check before I run the script to do my weekly update.

fatbloke, apparently not just you, look at the bottom of this post:
http://kanotix.com/PNphpBB2-viewtopic-t-21414.html

As for where to look for news of d-u warnings, they are usually on the News link (up the top of this page, to the left, ie
http://kanotix.com/module-News.html ) ... but I can't see anything there, so maybe it only affects a few users.

What version of Kanotix did you install?

check start page here, and check the warning section of the script for errors and warnings.

Yes I read that one - after I'd screwed up and managed to fix it - though I was looking to find out how to "upgrade-install" as I figured that as the 2006-1 is now at RC4 level I could get used to any differences etc and then when it's finalised just upgrade-install again to the final version.

Plus I got a little confused as I didn't get any apparent errors at all. It all came to a "grinding halt" after I'd told the script that I wanted to install the nvidia driver. It "just stopped".

Anyway, I got it sorted. I just have to remember to check for any possible problems before running the h2 script and not be so "trigger happy". Sehr glücklich

This note is simply to confirm that Fatbloke isn't the only one with x problems. I had the same problem with my 64-bit installation during a d-u on Friday, October 6. After some panic I stumbled on the xorg7 fix as well, which seemed to resolve the graphics issue.

Now if I could only get CUPS working, but that's an off-topic rant... it's sad, sad that a person with a decade's experience in Linux can't print anything more than test pages, because of authorization snafus.

Seem that i've got the same problem.
Started d-u with h2's script last friday without installing video driver.
After reboot it just not started the x-server.
I then re-installed 2006-01-rc4 and tried one's more with the same effect.
The 'fix' posted in the news doesn't help, it still refused to start X.
What is this xorg-fix fatbloke talked about?
