For those that have been waiting for it, a beta release of Flash 9 is available from the Adobe Labs website.

I'm in tears. Extract it, copy it into the FF plugin folder and it all works!

Well, I say f*ck em. August 2005 version 8 came out. 9 final came out in August and now they gives us a beta.

It is not even 64 bit.

Gnash is coming along nicely and for the year or so they have been at it they got it working on most flash 8 stuff.

I am not going to jump ship on them now that Abode finally saw some competition.

Flash9 works including sound so far in Iceweasel, Firefox, Seamonkey, Konqueror. I was able to watch the Yahoo Tv preview for the first time without using firefox in wine.

If Gnash worked for all Flash8 sites I would gladly use it, until it does I have no problems using what works.

I'm currently using the new beta, too. Works like a charm in Konqi & Firefox - finally using ALSA! But it fails using latest Opera (9.02-20060919.6): e.g. youtube player loads, but videos don't start playing.

checked opera's output on startup and on loading www.youtube.com, starting a video playback:
Code:
ERROR: ld.so: object 'libjvm.so' from LD_PRELOAD cannot be preloaded: ignored.
ERROR: ld.so: object 'libawt.so' from LD_PRELOAD cannot be preloaded: ignored.

(process:4711): GLib-GObject-CRITICAL **: gtype.c:2240: initialization assertion failed, use IA__g_type_init() prior to this function

(process:4711): Gtk-CRITICAL **: gtk_clipboard_get_for_display: assertion `GDK_IS_DISPLAY (display)' failed
Adobe FlashPlayer: gtk_clipboard_get(GDK_SELECTION_PRIMARY); failed. Trying to call gtk_init(0,0);

P.S.: using clean profile dir and purged&reinstalled opera

I tried one site which I know requires flash 8 - it said I needed to install flash 8 - does this work with flash 8+ in firefox?

PS Just tried the Sony site which seems to work though.

Looks like it Opera9 doesnt want to play nice:

(process:18951): GLib-GObject-CRITICAL **: gtype.c:2240: initialization assertion failed, use IA__g_type_init() prior to this function

(process:18951): Gtk-CRITICAL **: gtk_clipboard_get_for_display: assertion `GDK_IS_DISPLAY (display)' failed
Adobe FlashPlayer: gtk_clipboard_get(GDK_SELECTION_PRIMARY); failed. Trying to call gtk_init(0,0);
The program '<unknown>' received an X Window System error.
This probably reflects a bug in the program.
The error was 'BadWindow (invalid Window parameter)'.
(Details: serial 741 error_code 3 request_code 2 minor_code 0)
(Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously;
that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it.
To debug your program, run it with the --sync command line
option to change this behavior. You can then get a meaningful
backtrace from your debugger if you break on the gdk_x_error() function.)
opera: Plug-in 18951 is not responding. It will be closed.
opera: Define environment variable OPERA_KEEP_BLOCKED_PLUGIN to keep blocked plug-ins.

Another good reason to use Firefox/Iceweasel Smilie

perhaps this bug should be reported, if Adobe has a bug-reporting mechanism. Don't forget that this plugin is a BETA, so this MIGHT get fixed in a future build.

It's working for me in Opera 9. I see a lot of gtk stuff in your errors. I have gnome installed as well so that may explain it. I never use gnome and don't really like it but I have it there so I have the libraries.
craigevil - 20.10.2006, 06:12 Uhr

From the realease notes: "The plugin does not currently work in Opera browsers. We are working with Opera on this issue."

So if its working wel for you in Opera your one of the few lucky ones.

GLib errors in Opera9? Opera uses Qt for the menus and other widgets, but no GTK at all!

Nothin personal but if everyone thinks like that then when they don't realsie flash 10,11,12 for linux and Gnash has died because noone is using it we'll all be in the same boat Sehr glücklich

There is a Beta 2 of Flash 9 available (dated 20th November). Just follow this link (Adobe Labs). Contains mainly fixes for the sound support. Probably still not working with Opera but 'they are on it'

I agree. In fact, I believe that flash 9 came out for Linux directly because of gnash and alternatives.

Don't forget that they had already promised then retracted flash 8 on us.

And at least gnash is build on the 64 bit side
