best wait ´till it´ll appear in Sid.
on a test install you could try these rpm´s:
http://sonique54.free.fr/xgl/xgl.htm

I just tried it and ruined my whole xserver.
Had to reinstall. I think I will wait for it to hit the debian repos.

Just installed Suse 10.1 RC2 on a scratch partition in order to play with Xgl. (It will come as no surprise to learn that this version of Suse is still buggy. Xgl seems to work fine.)

xserver-xgl and compiz are both in the "Packages being worked on" list, so hopefully it won't be too much longer until Kano can write a script to automagically configure it. Winken

I used sonique instructions and I managed to work it.
I had a problem with "could not open default font 'fixed'" error, but when I added parameter:
Code:

-fp /usr/share/X11/fonts/misc

to Xgl command, it just worked.

maslota,

That screenshot looks really nice.
I want to use xgl and not necessarily Compiz to speed up window rendering. I've played around with xgl on other Linux distros and noticed a significant gain in speed.

If it isn't too much trouble to you, could you post:
a) Any bugs or instability when using xgl with kde. Is it stable enough with kde for everyday use? Are the video playback bugs fixed?
b) What you did (other than Sonique's instructions) to get it working with kde.
c) Any anticipated problems with a Radeon 9700 card?

Thank you very much.

a) None. I did it on my testing partition 2 days ago. I haven't played with it long enough to check it good.
b) I added '-fp' parameter to Xgl command. I think installation of gnome is not necessarily, but I didn't want to take a risk Smilie
c) I've read a lot about installation of xgl and I've noticed that many ATI users haven't been lucky

Am I correct in thinking that you pretty much have to have either a Nvidia or Ati card? I have integrated graphics - I assume they won't work, as I still can't get OpenGL working!

I've followed sonique's instructions, and the hint to use
Code:
-fp /usr/share/X11/fonts/misc
My fonts are in /usr/share/fonts/X11/misc/ instead, so I used
Code:
-fp /usr/share/fonts/X11/misc

Gnome ( I prefer KDE or others, but whatever) seems to start OK, but soon does a sort of half-crash, where I can open folders, but right-clicking or anything like that doesn't work. Window borders disappear, as do the desktop menus. Obviously, that's unworkable. Killing the xserver at that point either gets me a kernel panic, or boots me back to the command line, with error messages to the effect of GLib-CRITICAL **: g_key_file_add_group: assertion `g_key_file_lookup_group_node (key_file, group_name) == NULL' failed and fun things like that (all gtk errors).

However, this is farther than I've gotten before. Thanks, guys!

well the above link isn't working anymore and what's more, i wasn't able to make it happen, anyway.

so today, as i was looking for a script, i saw http://kanotix.com/files/install-compiz.sh ,
but this notice "don't try with fglrx driver installed!" made me stop before testing anything.
so has this been tested succesfully by anyone?
and when can we expect for fglrx driver to also work with? (i guess, this depends on ati, most probably?)
plus, first xgl repo, says all packages are alien-made.. is this really advisable?

thanks,
Dimitris.

P.S i understand it's all still experimental software. just wondering.

I tried it on my GeForce FX 5600XT - it worked fine with KDE & Gnome. Gnome will require you editing a GDM startup script. There are a few ways you could do it. No idea about ATI. If you want to test it you should probably dedicate a spare partition to a fresh install of the latest RC and try it there. There are some limitaions when using Xgl/compiz.

If you use GDM & Gnome, after runnig the install-compiz script you need to edit 1 file.
Code:
gedit /etc/gdm/gdm.conf

Add the following [servers]section:
Code:
[servers]
0=Xgl

[server-Xgl]
name=Xgl server
command=/usr/bin/Xgl :0 -fp /usr/share/fonts/X11/misc -fullscreen -ac -accel glx:pbuffer -accel xv:fbo
flexible=true

Then add startup-compiz.py to your ~/.gnome2/session-manual
Code:
echo startup-compiz.py >> ~/.gnome2/session-manual

CTRL+ALT+F1
Code:
#/etc/init.d/gdm restart

Now the install-compiz.sh script works in live mode too, as well as install-nvidia-debian.sh does or the fixed install-fglrx-debian.sh one. fglrx was very tricky to support, but now it works.

I will try it with liveCD and on a box with fglrx soon. On my nvidia-box the script worked well. Everythings wobbling now Winken

Interesting to see how this turns out. I have been wanting to try it but couldn't get it to work. SUSE was able to recognize half my hardware so I dumped. Didn't work right anyway. I have an ATI x1600 Pro with 512megs ram on board which should handle it but everywhere I look I see it is only for nVidia.

great work kano, I want to test your script with my ATI 9800 Pro and I hope not to ruin my nice system, however, I am not sure, if it works with the Easter Edition too. I do not want to provoke a crash...

I tried it on a cebit-edtion (pre Easter) with new kernel, new nvidia beta-driver and current dist-upgrade and it worked well.
