Titel: persistent home directory fails in Easter-RC4  BeitragVerfasst am: 05.09.2006, 09:36 Uhr

Has anyone else had trouble creating persistent home directories on USB thumbdrives with Easter-RC4? I get to the point where I set a size for knoppix.img and it begins formatting then... nothing. Nothing pops up... the USB thumbdrive gets unmounted and nothing is created.

Someone else has told me a similar story of failure with Easter-RC4. I have had no problem previously with 2005-04 creating knoppix.img.

A search of the forums and Google does not bring up any mention of this difficulty... Any ideas what the problem might be? I would like to be able to recommend the latest Kanotix CD for use, but this is something I would need to have working first.

Thanks for any input!

Hae you tried connecting to the 2005-04 image? This may be a workaround.

Thanks for the suggestion. Yes... I have used 2005-04 to create a persistent home directory on a USB thumbdrive. I am using it on a laptop right now and it works great.

But I am wondering why Easter-RC4 fails to create a knoppix.img? I ask because I am writing up a HOWTO and will be burning a few Live-CDs, and at this point I guess I will need to use the older 2005-04.

This is a bug the developers need to be aware of... I don't see it mentioned here in the forums.

You're right. There are at least two issues with the script mkpersistenthome: The script reads drive information from /etc/fstab where the thumb drive isn't included (it takes rebiuildfstab to get the thumb drive listed). The string for user name is empty "". I think it used to be user "knoppix".

Thanks for explaining where the problem occurs. I will just stick with 2005-04 for the time being - for my purposes, it works great.
