Ok, try this, in known types, under message (same section where application is left panel) see if rfc822 exists, if not, in the right panel click add and type kmail if not there

Hi Piper,

Under known types, in message, rfc822 was there and in the right panel,KMail was there as well. And, when I quit and restart control center, the mime message for octet-stream is still there.

Back to you

Hi Piper,

I've got good news for you. After continuing my search with Google,
I found a posting which mentioned about the entry under application
of octet-stream AS WELL AS an entry with the same text "octet-stream" in the description box on the right and then click apply, reboot and Presto, the mime entry has stayed, is associated with Kdepim, Control center, and Kmail and the annoying message is GONE.
The posting is at: wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Couldn't_find_MIME_type_application/octet-stream

Thanks again for persisting.
Cheers

Gilles

Hi Piper,

Now that the missing mime is out of the way, I've been looking for the boot log messages to check on my system status.
I've looked in /var/log/messages (from suggestions in postings) but that's not it. Where should I look?

Some to look at

dmesg

/var/log/messages (boot.log boot.msg)

/var/log/maillog

/var/log/secure

/etc/syslogd.conf

/var/log/kdm
