Hardware - a very basic question

Titel: a very basic question
Hello All,

First let me congratulate Kanotix. It's the only distro I've tried that sailed through my hardware identification. I think I can now settle down to learn something about Linux.

The question: how do I read a cd-rom? I popped my printer cd in a few minutes ago, and mounted it, and was asked what I wanted to open it with. I chose Open Office, for want of knowing any better, and then ended up with a cog icon on the desktop. When I opened that, I got what I think must have been a programming script.

I have searched and googled, by the way, without success.

open it with the default, konqueror file manager. If you want to open it, it depends on what is on the cdrom though, if it's data, files, konqueror, if it's music, one of the music apps, amarok, xmms, kaffeine.

Hi H2,

Ah, I bet that's simple to you. When I click open on the CD rom icon I get a window that shows 'bin', 'eum', etc. I did find a message somewhere from Oki, my printer, that said 'run setup.exe on the root of this cd'. Hhmm.

Anyway, I opened setup.exe but didn't find Konquerer File Manager. The cd should hold nowt but data - it's only operating instructions.

Any further ideas, please?

right click on the cd icon on the desk, mount it, then open it in /media/cdrom0 or whatever in konqueror.
with .exe you will have no luck though in linux.

Unless things have changed Oki only supply Windows drivers for your printer. .exe files are Windows executable only. If your printer is supported by Linux you can install it using configure printers from the Kanotix menu in the main K menu dropdown.

Hi Fellas,

Well, I see there's a lot to learn! My printer actually works under Kanotix - my particular model, B4250, isn't listed but I played with those that are and Okipage 600E did the trick.

All I wanted to do was to see why a light was flashing on the printer. The documentation is on the cd, and that's the trouble. I still can't find anything to read it and I just can't figure out how to apply, say, /media/cdrom0, to the task. I don't know the buttons to press.

Anyway, I took the cartridge out and then put it back and the light has gone out and the printer now works. But I'd still like to be able to read the CD if possible - I don't have Windows installed now.

Thanks for your replies.

Devil28,

Maybe this is why I couldn't do it! I don't have a 'house' icon on the desktop. I have trash, Kanotic IRC, Kanotix, floppy, and 15g media. That's all.

hello,

Nope: I can't locate cdrom0. 'Find files' found it but it's somewhere, apparently, in among the window with all the icons like 'bin', 'eum', etc. This is beyond me. Sorry.

Thanks for trying to help.

in konqueror there is your root tree on the left side. open media. in media is all your storage-devices.
there should be either cdrom0 or maybe its name is hda or hdb. gotta be there
