I can't seem to get guarddog to allow a bittorrent client to connect to the internet I'd like to use a simple one like Ktorrent but I suppose Azureus is ok too. Thanks!

Do you use a router also ?

In both Guarddog (never used it) and a router(if using) you have to set up the ports (firestarter is easier to configure from what I have read)

yes I use a router, and I'm not sure about firestarters security, people seem to think guarddog is better, I'm using windows also and have a port forwarded for utorrent, is it possible to use the same port in my router for a torrent client in Kanotix?

Does you router have a built-in firewall ? If so, you really don't need guarddog, firestarter, etc... (my opinion, others will vary and will post) not saying it will hurt to use it, kinda like windows with a hardware (router) and software (sygate, zone alarm) firewall together

Anywho, utorrent uses port range 32459 for start and end with both UDP and TCP. I don't see why you couldn't use the same settings in Kanotix as windows regarding the ports.

Guarddog has a manual but I cannot access any of there site's, could be down or having other problems or could be my end (Traurig)

I have no experience with guarddog period, I have used firestarter before just to check it out.

How can I test if my firewall on my router is safe? also I was just kind of wondering if Kanotix is unsafe like windows, where if you can access to the internet connection you have access to the computer and all the files?

You can test at ShieldsUP

Linux is not windows and is more secure, but is not perfect, the only safe computer is one NOT connected to the internet, but I don't think you will have any problems with Kanotix like you do with windows

I usually go to Shield's Up: https://www.grc.com/x/ne.dll?bh0bkyd2
which is a part of http://www.grc.com/default.htm

They offer some quick tests to see if your firewall is blocking the normal stuff.
This has been around quite a while.
