Hardware - Intel Mobile 915GM Problem

Titel: Intel Mobile 915GM Problem
Hi there,

i did a cd-upgrade to easter (from 2005-4), directly followed by dist-upgrade with h2s script, yesterday, sept. 12.

Now i can not watch dvds (and also mpeg from hardd disk) anymore. a lot of frames are lost. Did not have that problem before.

machine is an asus M4 laptop: Intel Pentium M 2048 KB cache flags( nx ) clocked at [ 1596.000 MHz ]
Videocard Intel Mobile 915GM/GMS/910GML Express Graphics Controller X.Org 7.0.0 [ 1024x768 @76hz ]
Memory 333.539/486.922MB | HDD IC25N060ATMR04-0 Size 60GB

kernel is: 2.6.17.13-slh-up-1 i686 [ KANOTIX 2006 Easter ]

i ran the xine-check script, it says: "Your X server doesn't have any XVideo support...You will waste lots of CPU cycles"

Also the script tells me: "I have found more than one occurance of 'xine' in your PATH:
/usr/X11R6/bin/xine
/usr/bin/xine
You have probably installed xine-ui more than once, or the directory where you have installed xine occurs more than once in your PATH"

(can not remember that i did a manual/additional install of xine myself before)

after the problem occured, i asked knxcc to "redetect" video card, the driver was then changed from "i810" to "vesa" after x restart. but problem stayed.

in Kanotix chat i was told to apt-get install libgl1-mesa-dev. I did that, but problem did not solve it as well.

Does anybody have an idea how to tackle this problem?
best

well, i have reinstalled with easter, did a nother dist-upgrade with h2s script, now it works. Something must have happened during the earlier install. Anyway, its fine now, so consider this solved! Smilie

Well, sorry you had to reinstall, but glad everything is now working, I have done upgrades in the past with CD with no problems and only done so for testing purposes to make sure it does work, but still, I prefer a "clean" install of any operating system Smilie (this is just my opinion, others may vary)

I like to do clean installs as well. Actually i like to do all kind of installs and updates (if it just wouldnt take so much time....), being very happy when it works, and if it doesnt work, well then i get annoyed for a moment, but the i get exited again, since i have to search for solutions, which can be fun as well Smilie Although for me it often feels like walking through fog - as i have very very limited knowledge of any serious configuration stuff. A big reason why i love Kanotix is that it is state of the art, it pushes you to learn more and if you are stuck, there will most likely be help avaiable. You are doing a great job guys!

in case other people have the same issue: After installing 2006-01-rc2 the above problem occured again. Thanks to help from Kano in the forum i was able to resolve it. The graphics card needs the driver "i810", but Kanotix had choosen "vesa" during install. I had to manually edit /etc/X11/xorg.conf
where it said :
# The following line is auto-generated by KNOPPIX mkxf86config
Driver "vesa"

i put in "i810" instead of "vesa"

now i810 gets loaded as default driver and it works well.

On a sidenote: kaffeine did not open after my 2006-01-rc-2 installation. After activating the i810 driver i had to delete and reinstall kaffeine, now its fine, i am able to watch DVDs
