Hardware - HP OmniBook 4150: Neomagic sound card does not work rafa2005ar - 12.03.2008, 01:19 Uhr Titel: HP OmniBook 4150: Neomagic sound card does not work
Hey you there.
I've seen this same topic was treated at this forum some two years ago, but -apparently- with no solution al all.
I'm just trying Kanotix for my first time and, actually, trying Linux on this notebook also for a first time.
Whichever be the sound app I try tu run, either it does not run or I come to the same error message:
<quote> function snd_ctl_open failed for default: No such device. <unquote>
I'll copy the output from lsmod, lspci ans alsamixergui below, just in case someboby has a solution over there:
alsamixer: function snd_ctl_open failed for default: No such device
knoppix@0[knoppix]$

It's impossible that you use Thorhammer.
rafa2005ar - 12.03.2008, 04:52 Uhr Titel: RE: HP OmniBook 4150: Neomagic sound card does not work
Thank for your comment. May I ask why would it be impossible? Anyway, it is not Thorhammer. It is Kanotix 2005-04.

Get Thorhammer, thats the answer.
rafa2005ar - 12.03.2008, 09:49 Uhr Titel: RE: HP OmniBook 4150: Neomagic sound card does not work
I've got only 128MB of RAM in my notebook. That is why I choose 2005-04 instead of Thorhammer which is said to need 192MB of RAM. Think I may get and try Thorhammer, and see if that is or that is not the answer .......

Buy ram, you will not get any support for that version.
rafa2005ar - 12.03.2008, 11:59 Uhr Titel: RE: HP OmniBook 4150: Neomagic sound card does not work
No support for 2005-04 either? Where am I? You sound like M$ telling there customers (!) what they can or cannot do. I'm a Kanotix-trying-to-be-user, in a supposedly open community and by no means a "customer". I do not want to buy any more RAM. I'm not even sure if I can find some for such an old laptop.
The answers for my original question on 2005-04 are still pending, and just in case you change yoour mind here we are with Thorhammer:
It runs and is very nice looking and feeling. Surely I will need to strip it down a little afteer installing to hard disk, but Thorhammer looks that it is worth a trying. My compliments on your and you team work.
Error messages:
a) The DBUS daemon is not working.
b) The process for the media protocol died unexpectdly.
Do not work (for what I tried up to now):
aa) Wireless network card is not seen. Corresponding windows drives were already ndiswrapped. May it be related to the DBUS daemon issue?
bb) Sound show exactly the same troubles as with 2005-04. Similar lspci and lsmod listings. Same alsamixer output. The sound card is detected and the corresponding device drivers modules are loaded. But there is no sound and the same error message appeared: .... function snd_ctl_open failed for default. No such device.
Will you live me here out in the wild? Let's hope you won't. Please receive my thanks in advance.

I can not see any wireless card from your pci listing, so if there is one, it is not cardbus. If sound stil does not work try a cheap USB soundcard or ask in #alsa channel on irc.freenode.net. If some other distro works better use it.

What a freezing unwelcome you are to me. Buy more ram (even if 128MB is said as sufficient for Kanotix 2005-04). Buy a USB sound card. Better use another distro. I can't believe you said that as long as Kanotix is allegedly -as said in kanotix.com- a distro with better hardware recognition "than any other operating system in use today" and as it supposedly "will run as a LIVE-CD on practically any computer -- automatically detecting and configuring virtually any piece of hardware". Quoted parts are textual fron from your web pages.
Even if the pice of hardware I have in hands were an exception to the allegedled rule of Kanotix quality to be over the Linux pack, we -the aspirants to enter the Kanotix user croud- may expect a more collaborative attitude from your part instead of rejection. I can not understand you and even less understand what is driving you so unbiaased to me.
I woul like to read your comments to above sayings.

It is indeed true, that Kanotix detecs Hardware very well. I did not have to configure anything from my notebook (Samsung R50) manually. But don't wonder that your hardware isn't detected very well if you use a 3 year old CD. If you want your hardware to be detected than use the latest available version.
Frankly, 128 MB RAM does not suffice for any Live CD currently available. So if you want to use your notebook with linux, buy some RAM, prices are very cheap nowadays!
Kano - 12.03.2008, 21:38 Uhr Titel: RE: HP OmniBook 4150: Neomagic sound card does not work
I am not responsible for alsa drivers. I can't do absolutely nothing in your case. Other problems usally could be solved like missing wlan or so but not sound. And if one out of X users finds a distro with a better suited kernel I have got absolutely nothing against it. 128 MB ram is not really much, would work maybe with a swapfile but when you look at current ram prices it is very unlikely that you could not afford it. You find even lots of 2nd hand ram for old hardware.
rafa2005ar - 12.03.2008, 22:59 Uhr Titel: RE: HP OmniBook 4150: Neomagic sound card does not work
amphy & Kano, thank you both for your answers.
Now I'm runing on 192 MB RAM and trying to use Thorhammer. So, it is the required RAM and an updated OS.
But the results are exactly the same as they were before: the sound card is NOT working notwithstanding it was indeed recognized and the corresponding device driver modules were loaded; the USB port is NOT recognized; and, the Win drivers for the wireless card are not processed by ndiswrapper or, if processed, the card itself is not recognized and associated with said drivers. The whole issue is the same as with Kanotix 2005-04. Here we have something more than RAM amount and 3 years or 0 years of OS version age. Something to which Kanotix, either 2005-04 or Thorhammer dos not fit to, or that -very obviously- I'm no able to resolve by myself. If not in this forum, were would I have better chances to get a solution?
Kano - 13.03.2008, 03:12 Uhr Titel: RE: HP OmniBook 4150: Neomagic sound card does not work
it is pretty clear that ndiswrapper does not see the card, because it would be needed that is is a cardbus device (then it would be seen with lspci) or usb - then you would see it via lsusb. Your card is most likely old fashoned pcmcia:
pccardctl info
dptxp - 13.03.2008, 06:51 Uhr Titel: RE: HP OmniBook 4150: Neomagic sound card does not work
I had to enable 'Front' in ALSA mixer (multimedia>alsamixergui) on my laptop. For volume control to work, I had to right click, click on "select master channel', and select
FRONT.
But it seems that you have hardware related issues.
And if Kanotix fails to work after all your efforts, try Anti-X. If you make a swap partition first, then with 192 MB RAM (I assume that you have 256 MB, 64 goes to video), you can even run Ubuntu or SimplyMepis.
