Okay, time for the new guy to ask the next question. Yes, I use kpackage and apt-get but there are other things out there that I want. I know how to get them and to install/use them, my question is where do I put them. I have seen a list of folders (generic linux) but I really am not sure. Example, I download the nightly firefox builds once a week. Where would the logical place be for me to put the folder? Also, is there I way that I can put that in the menu? Do I use menu edit under Settings? Just want to make sure before I screw it up.

Thanks,

John

/home/<username>/bin is a good place for stuff like nightly builds I think. That's where I put my testing stuff.

You can add anything you want to the menu, just put in the path, locate the icon, and add it, same for desktop shortcuts.

Thanks for the info. That is where I have firefox now and a couple of other things but I wasn't for sure if I should be putting it some other place.

Jip. Right there. Better don't change Things, that are already in the menu and do not add something to the "Debian"-Submenu. If you screw up, you can still remove your kde-profile to get the default back I guess.

Too late, already took a couple of things out of the debian menu. I don't use them, don't want them so I got rid of them. I just want to clean up the menu to make it easier to use. I hated the menus (start button) in windows 98SE and XP. Never used them. I want to use something that has the programs that I use in it. I have broadband, will never have dsl, adsl, isdn, etc. Why should that be installed much less on the menu. Just more clutter. I am really enjoying using linux and liking it more and more everyday but I still like to personalize.

Thanks for the info but what is Jip?

well, if you want to get rid of an app in the debian-menu you might probably remove it entirely from you system.
in such cases don't delete just the menu-item but uninstall the app through apt-get remove <app>.
for me things that I only removed from the menu, went to appear again after the next update.
so still feel free to personalize (that's one of the main advantages of linux), but be sure you make it the "right" (tm) way Winken Winken

zulu9,

Thanks for the advice. One of the problems that I have had is like I had in windows. There is always a lot junk that is added whether you need it or not. I see that kde is very bad about this. I went through kpackage to get the names of the stuff that installed that I didn't need. When I uninstalled it, I broke the system and had to redo everything. For instance, I have no wifi on my computer and probably never will. I know I will never use isdn. Why do I need programs for these. I have a lot of different editors that I don't use. I have try gimp and it is way to advanced for me and I have no desire to learn it. If I get rid of things that I don't want what will I break. That was one of the things that I hated about windows. I know that I am looking for something beside kde. I have tried gnome and do not want to use it. That was my biggest objection to ubuntu. I have tried xfce and the ones that came with the package and I don't like them either.

Sorry, didn't mean to rant on about trival stuff. As a whole, I love kanotix. I have had minor problems but much less than I had with win 98 or xp. Just have to get the "personal" touch working.

zulu9,

Thanks for that but now I am lost. I have done one upgrade. I used h2's script. Went to the page you linked and wrote down everything I could, step by step. Then I ran it and followed the notes. I don't remember an option to uninstall unneeded/unwanted stuff. I must have missed it. I see in the instructions (now I see it) that there is an option. Would you explain more (point me where I need to go) about that portion and I will do another upgrade in a couple of days (after I reread the instructions several times). Will this script also update my installed programs or is that separate?

Thanks a bunch,

John

Piper,

hello again, any suggestions on a good gui? Something that I can tailor to my likes?

apt-get dist-upgrade upgrades every debian package on your system when you run it, and since that's what this script executes, yes, every program on your system gets updated when you run it.

The list of removable programs is available two places, one the option menu you get to after the fix-fonts question after a dist-upgrade, and second from the last option menu you get to before the graphics installer stuff, the Miscellaneous Tweaks section:
POST DIST-UPGRADE FIXES

is the option menu name, and package-removal is the option for misc package removal

that's also where the xorg unused package removal and the debian orphans removal is located

Hi John

Sorry, no gui that I know of, h2's script works very well for d-u's, kernel upgrades, and some package removal's. Try it, you'll like it Winken have any problems/questions post here or pm, or irc.

h2,

Just to make sure, you are not telling me to use apt-get dist-upgrade. You are saying that your script does that and more. I should not do apt-get dist-upgrade but I should run your script and accomplish the same thing, is that correct. You have to excuse these senior moments, they sneak up on me sometimes. I did use your script before and will use it again, pretty simple to do if you follow the instructions that you wrote. I like it, even I could do it.

Now that I have both computers up I will have the instructions on one and execute on the other. I also saved your instructions in your post so I will know where to look. Probably do this next week.

Thanks to you both for help,

John

Hi John

You are still doing a "apt-get dist-upgrade" with apt, thats not different, this drops you down to init 3, does the "keys" for you, it basically makes it easy for the newer user and a joy for the "more advanced" It gives you some tweaks and the option to install/uninstall other things. It does the apt-get update/apt-get dist-upgrade inside. It seems like magic, but really it's not. It does work very well. Hope this don't sound to confusing. Winken h2 I am sure can explain it a hell of alot better than me Smilie
