It is nice that with the Kanotix-Hellfire Release the English part of the Forum is active again. 
Make sure that the last post of the issue is new. It is a bad idea to follow outdated advices from 2008. Better you open a new topic here.
Gnome:
In Kanotix KDE is the default and preferential Desktop and things work better. Nethertheless there are gnome packages like gparted.
So if you like the gnome just install it. perhaps by using synaptic. |

Hi towo
I have disabled all the other repos except squeeze to do this, as lat time it gave broken passages and Kanotix refused to let it overwrite branding, so here's hoping.

Oh Dear as I thought Kanotix does not like Gnome

This package conflicts with your grup2 splash (the conflict is missing there it seems). Just do
apt-get remove --purge grub2-splashimage-kanotix-logo
apt-get install -f
do not reinstall... |

Thanx Kano but it seems a lost cause, Kanotix with all the latest defeats it.
Anyway I prefer a good solid KDE.

I uploaded a new grub2-splashimage-kanotix-logo package which can be installed instead of desktop-base.
apt-get update
apt-get install grub2-splashimage-kanotix-logo |
